In the 100th anniversary year of the Bauhaus in 2019, the re:bauhaus festival draws attention to the conditions that gave rise to the Bauhaus, in general to functionalism, in Central Europe in the context of the development of modern societies and states around 1919. The thematic focus is on the societal emancipation and the simultaneous identification with the fundamental ideas and the architecture of modernism. In this respect bauhausTWINS addresses today‘s perception in dealing with the heritage of modernism, with regard to its significance, sustainable development and „assemblage“ also in the sense of rebuilding and reassembling our cities and buildings.

The project in the Czech Republic is shown as a room-in-room installation in PLATO, a former Bauhaus store temporary used by the Art Gallery of the City of Ostrava – after its successful preview at the Baukultur Convention in Potsdam in November 2018. On this extraordinary site, which plays ironically and contemporary with the heritage of the Bauhaus, bauhausTWINS embodies a haptic medium that relates the historical origin, the change over time and the today’s interpretation. As a spatial assemblage on a large scale, bauhausTWINS serves as a stage for discussion events and artistic projects.

bauhausTWINS is a walk-in installation from reused facade elements from the Atelierhaus facade of the Bauhaus Dessau, which originated from its great post-war renovation from 1976, for the 50th anniversary of the Dessau Bauhaus building. The window and door elements were dismantled on the occasion of a further renovation and reconstruction of the Atelierhaus facade in 2011 and assigned to zukunftsgeraeusche by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

The facade elements are part of the overall project bauhaus reuse, which is mainly represented by the bauhaus reuse building, that consists of the elements of the north facade of the Bauhaus Dessau. The bauhaus reuse is located on Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Berlin and hosts the Berlin location of the festival re:bauhaus, creating a material and symbolic connection with the installation bauhausTWINS and the special venue in Ostrava.

The installation consists of a hot-dip galvanized steel structure in which the reused facade elements are placed in different constellations and create a stage-like spatial structure with different levels and spatial situations.

The construction is open to all sides and creates a different spatial impression and access from every direction: from the scale of the studio rooms of the Atelierhaus building to a dissolving structure that opens up an extended context and space for reflection.

The title bauhausTWINS plays with the English term twinning. Which is not only associated for the process of reuse in a new context. It emphasises the special phenomenon of the simultaneous existence of two versions of the facade elements: the reconstructions of 1976 and of 2011. But it also means partnership. In this sense it is used for instance for the term town twinning or within the accession process to the European Union. And as well it appropriately stands for the coupling in steel construction.

Apprentices from the Competence Center for Sustainable Construction in Cottbus participated in the production of the installation. They took care of the elements for the protection of their existing substance, the repair of damages and the replacement of glazing. Whereby neither a reconstruction nor a renovation in accordance with monument protection laws stood in the foreground, but the confrontation with Baukultur in vocational training and education, for the study of the elements of modernism as a kind of „ready-made“ and as a cultural medium.

The installation bauhausTWINS is a project by zukunftsgeraeusche in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, German Federal Foundation of Baukultur, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Berufsförderungswerk des Bauindustrieverbands Berlin-Brandenburg – Competence Center for Sustainable Building in Cottbus, TU Berlin – Faculty of Building Physics and Building Constructions and will be shown in the framework of re:bauhaus in cooperation with PLATO Ostrava supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
