Identity: A History of Czech Graphic Design
With Identität. Geschichte des tschechischen Grafikdesigns, BHROX bauhaus reuse presents a newly opened exhibition dedicated to the rich and multifaceted history of Czech graphic design. Designed to be both scholarly and visually engaging, the exhibition emphasizes graphic design as a central medium through which cultural identity is constructed, negotiated, and communicated.
The exhibition encompasses a wide range of visual media—including posters, books, magazines, corporate and wayfinding systems, and national symbols—offering a comprehensive overview of Czech graphic design from the early 20th century to the present. In this context, graphic design is presented not merely as a form of visual communication, but as an active agent in shaping collective memory, political narratives, and cultural self-understanding.
Special attention is given to the complex historical conditions in which Czech graphic design developed. The exhibition traces its evolution from the establishment of Czechoslovakia, through the upheavals of two world wars, to the profound transformations under successive totalitarian regimes. It further examines the transition from a centrally planned socialist economy to a market-oriented society, showing how political and economic shifts influenced both the aesthetics and societal role of graphic design. In this way, the exhibition highlights the resilience and adaptability of designers working within—and often against—rapidly changing ideological contexts.
Original works are complemented by carefully selected reproductions, allowing visitors to engage with key milestones and influential figures in Czech graphic design. Extensive curatorial texts contextualize these works within their broader cultural, historical, and political frameworks, offering critical insights into the reciprocal relationship between design and society. The exhibition not only documents historical developments but also emphasizes the capacity of graphic design to reflect, critique, and actively shape societal change.
The exhibition is curated by Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská, in collaboration with commissioner David Korecký. It is part of the interdisciplinary project Identity – The Story of Czech Graphic Design, an ambitious multi-format initiative that includes a seven-part television series, a feature film, and a bilingual monograph published in Czech and English. Collectively, these formats contribute to a broader effort to reassess and disseminate the history of Czech graphic design in an international context.
As a travelling exhibition, Identity results from a collaboration between by Typo, Mowshe Studio, Museum of Literature, and Czech Centres. The visual identity of the exhibition was developed by Marvil Studio, while the exhibition design was conceived by Adam Blažek, Jan Kloss, and Matěj Činčera of Okolo.
As a newly opened exhibition in Berlin, Identität offers a timely opportunity to engage with questions of design, identity, and historiography from a transnational perspective. It invites visitors, researchers, and practitioners alike to reconsider the role of graphic design within broader cultural and political processes and to explore how visual communication both reflects and shapes the societies in which it operates.
