Heritage Forum of Central Europe 2024: Exploring “Responsibility & Renewal”
The 7th edition of the Heritage Forum of Central Europe will be held on September 4th and 5th, 2024, at the International Cultural Centre in Kraków. This year’s forum, themed “Responsibility & Renewal,” will address pressing issues in heritage conservation in light of the ongoing situation in Ukraine and the anniversaries of the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1964 Venice Charter.

The forum will feature a series of panels and a keynote lecture, focusing on key topics:
1. International Criminal Responsibility for Cultural Heritage Crimes: Examining the effectiveness of international legal frameworks established by the Hague Convention and its protocols, this panel will discuss the current state of justice for crimes against cultural heritage, considering both past achievements and future improvements.
2. Heritage Responsibility in Central Europe: This discussion will explore the evolving roles of heritage stakeholders in Central Europe, impacted by recent political and economic changes. It will address the growing involvement of civil society and the challenge of preserving heritage with unclear ownership.
3. Monument Renewal and the Venice Charter: Marking 60 years of the Venice Charter, this panel will evaluate its lasting influence on monument restoration practices and its relevance in today’s conservation landscape.
4. Heritage as a Catalyst for Renewal: This session will investigate how heritage can be leveraged to drive societal, cultural, and economic benefits, including community revitalization, identity reinforcement, and economic development through tourism and job creation.
5. Post-War Heritage Renewal in Ukraine: Focusing on Ukraine, this panel will discuss strategies for post-war heritage recovery, drawing on successful past initiatives to address challenges and develop effective solutions for future renewal.
The Heritage Forum of Central Europe will be held in conjunction with the ETOM NEB Lab International Conference to commemorate “60 Years of Halle-Neustadt” and in the framework of “ETOM – European Triennial of Modernism” and the “NEB – New European Bauhaus”. This event is scheduled to take place in Halle on October 13th and 14th.
