Werkbund Forum: IBA Berlin 2034/37 in Dialogue
With the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Berlin 2034/37, Berlin has an extraordinary opportunity: the city can once again demonstrate its innovative strength in architecture, urban planning, and urban development – continuing the tradition of Interbau 1957 and IBA 1984/87, both of which set international standards.
Berlin has excellent prerequisites for a successful IBA process: a diverse and creative architecture and planning scene, extensive experience from previous building exhibitions, and valuable insights from current IBA projects both in Germany and abroad. At the same time, several key challenges remain: ambitious projects must be financed despite limited public funds, political and social interests must be reconciled, and complex administrative structures require clear and efficient processes.
For this reason, it is all the more important to initiate an open dialogue at an early stage, to develop sustainable structures, and to mobilize broad support across society.
This is where the Werkbund Forum IBA Berlin comes in. Through a series of events, analyses, and dialogue formats, the forum brings together experts from architecture, urban planning, politics, academia, and civil society. Its goal is to critically accompany the IBA process, introduce new perspectives, and develop concrete impulses for themes, locations, and projects for IBA 2034/37.
Two additional events on the topics of “Preservation of Existing Buildings” and “Governance” are currently in preparation. The dates will be announced shortly.
Outlook
#6 – Governance Structures of Building Exhibitions
On Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 6:30 PM, the sixth event of the IBA Werkbund Forum will take place at BHROX bauhaus reuse on the central island of Ernst-Reuter-Platz.
The central question of the evening is:
What governance structures are needed for a successful building exhibition?
The event will focus on the organizational, political, and institutional frameworks that are crucial for the success of an International Building Exhibition.
Topics and Questions of the Event
On the Governance Structure of an IBA Berlin
Among others, the following questions will be discussed:
1) What insights can be gained from the International Building Exhibitions of the past decade with regard to their governance structures?
2) What contributions can and does Berlin want to make within the framework of an IBA? What lines of conflict can be expected?
3) What decision-making structures and conflict-resolution mechanisms are required?
4) What legal, organizational, and curatorial status should an IBA company receive?
5) Is the proposed time horizon of 2034/37 realistic?
6) How can urban society be activated and involved in the IBA process?
7) What quality standards („IBA Excellence‟) should apply to the projects of an IBA Berlin 2034/37 ?
8) How can this quality be ensured in the long term?

#1 – Kick-off: IBA 2034 in Dialogue – Where Do We Stand? – The series began with a first public event of the Werkbund Forum on April 8, 2025.
Based on the discussion, Deutscher Werkbund Berlin published Dossier #1:
“What Can We Learn from the History of the IBA? Success Factors for International Building Exhibitions.”
Background: Why is Werkbund Berlin initiating this series?
Tradition and Experience
The Werkbund was already active in previous IBA processes and brings valuable historical experience to the discussion surrounding IBA 2034/37.
Independent Perspective
As an independent institution, the Werkbund is not directly involved in the planning process and can therefore provide constructive, critical, and professionally grounded impulses.
Interdisciplinary Dialogue
The forum brings together architects, urban planners, sociologists, researchers, and representatives of civil society in order to connect different perspectives.
Impulses for the Future of the IBA
The event series is not only intended as a discussion platform, but also as a generator of ideas for concrete projects, themes, and strategies for IBA Berlin 2034/37.
