Punk in Afrika

Südafrika, Tschechien, Simbabwe, Mosambik 2012, Regie: Keith Jones, Deon Maas, 84 Minuten

Punk is not commonly associated with Africa, but already in the 1970s there was an active underground scene in Johannesburg, active in various genres. The documentary “Punk in Africa” tells about this and the further development of punk in South Africa but also in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The themes of the punk movement in the three countries are admittedly different from those in Great Britain or the United States: political oppression, apartheid, civil war and economic hardships are at the center. In addition, mixed bands of blacks and whites formed early on to protest apartheid and racism. Thus punk, post-punk in the 80s and ska in the 90s stand for a radical awakening in southern Africa. The film shows historical concert footage and lets the protagonists of that time have their say.
The directors on their film: “When we developed the idea for Punk in Africa, we wanted to explore the question of how the Eurocentric social revolution of punk could become a serious political movement in South Africa and how the idea of revolution spread to other African countries whose political conditions required harder protests.”
