The workshop complements the evening event “Housing now and tomorrow – Creating Sustainable Neighborhoods” and serves to facilitate an in-depth professional exchange between the committees and executive boards of the participating Architects’ Associations from Berlin/Germany and the Czech Republic. In the afternoon workshop a focused working group discusses key topics from the evening event, aligns positions, and identifies starting points for further collaboration:
- A) Comparison of current debates within the Architects’ Associations in Germany/Berlin and the Czech Republic how to address the shortage of affordable housing
- B) Best Practice Examples – e.g. alternative models for creating housing such as building cooperatives and housing cooperatives, the conversion of existing buildings or office spaces, and modular, mass-produced, and standardized construction
The Berlin Chamber of Architects (AKB) presents its position paper “More Than Just New Construction: For Affordable, Climate-Friendly, and Livable Urban Housing in Berlin” (7/2026), which outlines ten demands and 58 measures proposed by the AKB’s “Urban Housing” strategy group for a structural realignment of Berlin’s housing and urban development policies.

The Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA) reports on the current debate regarding the newest amendment to the Czech Building Code and its potential impact on housing construction. In addition, ČKA shares the perspective of its “Dostupné bydlení” (Affordable Housing) working group, founded in May 2025, which focuses on the growing societal needs – from rising costs and complex building permits to excessive building standards and high land prices. Its approach: to address the issue of affordable housing not in isolation, but within the context of economic viability, sustainability, quality of life, and urban design qualities – including collaborations with the public sector and investors, monitoring new legislations, and promoting cost-effective building standards.

The “archint at BHROX” series brings together experts and interested individuals from Germany and the Czech Republic to discuss current topics related to architecture, urban development, and building culture. The focus of the 2026 events will be on sustainable neighborhoods in terms of housing, public space, the legacy of the post-reunification years and the accompanying generational shift, as well as the handling of existing late-modernist buildings.
The series was initiated by the Czech Centre Berlin and BHROX bauhaus reuse and is being implemented in cooperation with the Berlin Chamber of Architects and the Czech Chamber of Architects. Additionally, the series is part of the European network ETOM and the ETOM NEB Lab, an official Lab-Project within the framework of the New European Bauhaus, which promotes exchange on the transnational genesis of Modernism and sustainable architecture and building culture and is supported by approximately 40 institutions from 15 countries. The project “archint at BHROX 2026” is supported by the German-Czech Future Fund.
