With the exhibition “FRAU ARCHITEKT*IN” the Chamber of Architects Berlin, the Institute of Architecture of the TU Berlin and the Architecture Museum of the TU Berlin show the video lounge “FRAU ARCHITEKT” of the German Architecture Museum Frankfurt (DAM), the “Survival Lounge” after Sara Ahmed, the project “Berlin Women Architects: Oral History,” selected graduate student works from 1950-70, the “fem*MAP BERLIN,” and the exhibition “Queens of Structure” in cooperation with BHROX bauhaus reuse on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Mittelinsel.
From the exhibition text: “In 2017, the exhibition “FRAU ARCHITEKT” opened at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum Frankfurt. From the review “For more than 100 years: Women in the Architecture Profession” (its subtitle), it probed for the first time achievements of female architects while contrasting them with their perception in a male-dominated professional field – rightly a historical and biographical approach. Together, the Chamber of Architects and the Technical University developed the desire to bring the exhibition to Berlin on the occasion of the “Women in Architecture” (WIA) festival planned for 2020. What was initially planned “only” as a takeover supplemented by local biographies, whose exhibition architecture was to be designed in an architecture seminar, developed a life of its own in the theoretical and practical discourse of the students involved. What connects the past with the current world of experience of those who are on the threshold of a profession?
What can, and what must, be the focus of a feminist gaze in architecture today?
In design projects, research seminars and archive research, a multidimensional project (…) emerged around the core of “FRAU ARCHITEKT”: [FRAU] ARCHITEKT*IN.
Postponed by a year, redesigned again and again under the changing demands of the pandemic and finally compressed for the limited space of the wonderful pavilion BHROX bauhaus reuse, all parts planned together could nevertheless stay together. They will unfold in dialogue with their visitors*.”
The exhibition “FRAU ARCHITEKT*IN” is organized by the Berlin Chamber of Architects, the Institute of Architecture at the TU Berlin and the Architekturmuseum der TU Berlin in cooperation with BHROX bauhaus reuse.
