Art projects in public space
April 2020 until May 2021
The residency programme THE ONLY ARTIST was launched on the occasion of the lockdown in spring 2020. In the middle of the city, the spaces BHROX bauhaus reuse enabled art production in full view of the public despite the pandemic.
The central islands of Ernst-Reuter-Platz, encircled by a roundabout, offer a large platform for this in the city – at the same time, the heritage-protected garden with water basins and fountains convey the feeling of a calm pole and a peculiar Berlin oasis. With the transparent glass pavilion BHROX, a relatively Corona-resilient cultural space has been created that allowed artists to continue producing art in isolation as well as in front of an audience.
A total of 20 artists/collectives developed new forms of performance practice and mediation at BHROX. The artists each worked for a week and the results of these artistic examinations were made accessible to the public on site and online, in a live stream. Duration and content of the presentations were depending on the projects and ranged from large-scale installations to individual workshop works by musicians, authors, sculptors, performers, audio and video artists.
The artworks also became a performative engagement with the zeitgeist in the pandemic, in and with urban space, and thus explored the new pandemic normality in which the relevance of the visibility of artistic work in public space became apparent – especially because live streams and purely digital mediation repeatedly came up against the limits of the audience and the artists…
